STOP TRANS PATHOLOGIZATION 2012
TGEU supports the "Stop Trans Pathologization 2012"-campaign of the Trans Depathologization-Network.
In the following we are presenting the network, the beginnings of the campaign and TGEU’s call for action/support and document all groups, networks and individuals that join the campaign this year.

The Network and its beginnings
The starting point of the International Trans Depathologization Network was a joint action between Spanish and French trans groups against Trans Pathologization. Their precedents can be found in the Existrans demonstrations in Paris which began more then ten years ago.
In October 2007, the first mobilizations against trans pathologization took place in Barcelona, Madrid and Paris. In 2008, already 11 European cities (A Corunha, Barcelona, Bilbao, Brussels, Donostia, Gasteiz, Lille, Lisbon, Madrid, Paris, Zaragoza) realized demonstrations demanding the removal of the Gender Identity Disorder from the DSM-IV and ICD-10.

Throughout the last two years, trans groups and allies, mainly from the Spanish context, started to collaborate more closely, creating the actual Trans Depathologization Network with the objective to organize an international campaign called Stop Trans Pathologization: Goal 2012. This campaign has the aim to realise an annual international call for action each October until 2012, date in which the next DSM-V will be published.
In 2009, a big step regarding the international diffusion of the campaign has been achieved. To date (October 16th), 200 groups from 40 countries and 7 international networks are supporting the campaign, and there will be mobilizations in 39 cities on October 17th 2009.

The actual campaign and its manifesto
The organization form of the actual campaign follows the idea of a multifocal, decentralized network of groups that share a common demand: the removal of the Gender Identity Disorder from DSM-IV and ICD-10.
This year, the set data for demonstrations or actions worldwide is October 17th.
The interested groups/organizations are invited to support the campaign, as well as to organize a mobilization in their own context/city. The groups who started the campaign accorded five demands and a joint manifesto.

Each group and/or city that wants to realize an action on October 17th for Stop Trans Pathologization – Goal 2012, can redact their own local manifesto. The principal demand of the campaign (“The removal of Gender Identity Disorder from the international diagnosis manuals”) should be expressed in each manifesto. The four additional demands accorded by the Trans Depathologization Network can be taken into consideration, modified according to the local context, left out or completed.

TGEU’s Call for Action/Support: STOP TRANS PATHOLOGIZATION 2012
The European Transgender Network “Transgender Europe" (TGEU) supports the annual campaign of the Trans Depathologization Network and calls upon its member organizations and other European trans organizations as well as our allies in other world regions to join the campaign and organise actions in their cities or countries.
The Steering Committee of TGEU has adopted three additional demands in relation to the removal of Gender Identity Disorder from the DSM and ICD. We have added these demands because we want trans people to have access to health insurance funded hormones and surgery options without having to be pathologized as disordered in terms of their identity. We also want all trans people to be able to change their name and gender in all documents without requiring any compulsory medical treatment or diagnosis:
- The creation of an alternative non-pathologizing category in the ICD 11, recognizing that our gender identities are not mental health disorders while still enabling hormonal and surgical medical assistance to be provided for those trans-people who seek such assistance.
- The funding of hormonal and surgical medical assistance for trans people by national health insurance.
- The creation of processes for changing legal name and gender without compulsory treatment or any form of diagnosis.
However, every trans organization joining the campaign is free to choose their demands as long as the main demand is supported. We encourage participating organisations to choose their additional demands to best reflect their current national medical and legal situations.
We will collect actions that will take place on October 17th 2009 and we will document them in the following.

Transgender Day of Remembrance
Transgender Day of Remembrance
Since 1999, the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), on which those trans people who have been victims of homicide are remembered, takes place every 20th November. The TDoR raises public awareness of hate crimes against trans people, provides a space for publicly mourning and honours the lives of those trans people who might otherwise be forgotten. Started in the U.S.A., the TDOR is now held in many parts of the world.

11th International Transgender Day of Remembrance
To provide information for the International Transgender Day of Remembrance to trans people, human rights activists and the international community, Transgender Europe is presenting the recent update of the preliminary
results of TGEU's /Trans Murder Monitoring Project/ in the form of tables, name lists, and maps on the TGEU Website in English, Spanish, and German.

Seit 1999 findet jährlich im November der Transgender Day of Remembrance TDOR (Transgender Tag des Erinnerns) statt, an dem Trans-Personen jener Trans-Personen gedenken, die im Laufe des Jahres ermordet wurden. Die TDOR-Veranstaltungen finden im November statt, um an Rita Heester zu ehren, die am 28. November 1998 ermordet wurde.
TDOR-Veranstaltungen finden statt, um die Öffentlichkeit auf Hassverbrechen,die an Trans-Personen begangen werden aufmerksam zu machen und um einen öffentlichen Raum zum Gedenken und Ehren derjenigen zu schaffen, die sonst in Vergessenheit geraten würden.
Ursprünglich als US-amerikanische Tradition entstanden finden die Veranstaltungen zum TDOR mittlerweile in vielen Teilen der Welt statt. Dieses Jahr finden am 20. November Veranstaltungen in mehr als 120 Städten in 17 Ländern in Afrika, Asien, Europa, Ozeanien sowie in Nord- und Lateinamerika statt.
Traurigerweise sind dieses Jahr mehr als 160 Trans-Personen zu erinnern und zu ehren sowie ihren Verlust zu betrauern (siehe Abschnitt unten). Die unten aufgeführten Namen wurden vom Forschungsteam des Trans Murder Monitoring-Projektes der internationalen NGO Transgender Europe (TGEU) zusammengestellt (weitere Informationen finden sich in untenstehendem Abschnitt: „Aktualisierung der TMM-Ergebnisse“ sowie in der Sektion TGEU-research auf dieser Webseite).

Bemerkungen zu den Berichten ermordeter Trans-Personen
Bei der Verwendung der von Transgender Europes Trans Murder Monitoring-Projekt zur Verfügung gestellten Daten, ist es wichtig zu beachten, dass aus den folgenden vier Gründen, diese Daten nicht die tatsächliche Situation wiedergeben. Sie zeigen nur einen Ausschnitt der Realität, die Spitze des Eisberges an Morden an Trans-Personen weltweit. Die Realität sieht viel schlimmer aus.
1.) Die zusammengetragenen Informationen zeigen nur die Fälle, die berichtet wurden. Die Dunkelziffer ist nicht bekannt.
2.) Die hier präsentierten Zahlen zeigen nicht alle weltweit berichteten Fälle, sondern nur jene, die mit einiger Anstrengung im Internet gefunden werden können. Berichte lokaler Tageszeitungen, die keinen Webauftritt haben, fehlen ebenso.
3.) Aufgrund der vielen Dutzend Sprachen, die im Internet benutzt werden, der Vielfalt an Begriffen mit den Trans-Menschen bezeichnet werden und den Myriaden an Webseiten im World Wide Web ist es einfach nicht möglich alle im Internet existierenden Berichte zu finden.
4.) Bei der Berichterstattung über ermordete Trans-Menschen ergibt sich häufig ein spezifisches Problem. Viele ermordete Trans-Personen werden in den Berichten nicht als Trans-Personen dargestellt.
Es ist weiterhin zu beachten, dass das Trans Murder Monitoring-Projekt alle Formen von Morden an Trans-Personen betrachtet. Es gibt eine häufig auftauchende Schwierigkeit bei der Klassifikation von Morden an Trans-Personen als Hassverbrechen. Diese entsteht durch einen Mangel an Informationen in den Berichten sowie dem Fehlen nationaler Erfassungssysteme solcher Verbrechen. Obwohl die in den Berichten erwähnte brutale Gewalt und Begleitumstände darauf schließen lassen, das sehr viele und vielleicht alle oder fast alle Fälle transphobe Hassverbrechen sind, werden sie in diesem frühen Stadium der Präsentation vorläufiger Ergebnisse, als Berichte über ermordete Trans-Personen klassifiziert.

INTERNATIONAL TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE 2009
Since 1999 the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), in which trans people remember those trans people who have been murdered, has been held annually in November.
The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, who was murdered on November 28th 1998. The Transgender Day of Remembrance is held to raise public awareness of hate crimes against trans people, to provide a space for publicly mourning and honoring the lives of those trans people who might otherwise be forgotten.
Having started in the U.S.A., the TDOR is now held in many parts of the world. This year TDOR events are known to be taking place on November 20th in more than 140 cities in 21 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania (see the section below).
Sadly, this year there are more than 160 trans persons to be remembered, mourned and honored (see the section below). The reported names listed below were collected by the research team of Transgender Europe’s “Trans Murder Monitoring Project” (for more information see “TMM TDOR result update” or the TGEU research section).

Notes on reports of murdered trans people
When using the data presented by the Trans Murder Monitoring project, please note that for the following four reasons the data presented does not reflect the true situation. It shows only a glimpse of reality, the tip of the iceberg of worldwide murders of trans people. The reality is much worse:
1.) The collected data shows only those cases which have been reported. There is no data and no estimates available for the unreported cases.
2.) The data presented here does not show all reported cases worldwide, but only most of those, which can only be found on the Internet with some effort. Reports from local newspapers which have no web page are also missing.
3.) Because of the dozens of languages used in the Internet, the diversity of terms denominating trans people, and the myriad of web pages in the World Wide Web to date it is simply not possible to find all reports shown on the Internet.
4.) There is a specific problem regarding the reporting of murdered trans persons. Not all trans people that are murdered are reported as trans.
Please note also, that the Trans Murder Monitoring project is reporting all kinds of murders of trans people. There is often a difficulty in classifying the murder of trans persons as hate crimes. This is due to a lack of information in the reports as well as the lack of national monitoring systems. Although the brutal violence and the reported circumstances in the reported cases are indicating that quite a lot of them and maybe most or almost all cases are transphobic hate crimes or crimes that occur related to a specific situation trans people have to face in some countries (being forced to do sex work to earn one’s living due to refusal of employment) in this first stage of presenting the results, they are classified as reports of murdered trans persons.

There have been 162 murders of trans people reported from November 20th 2008 to November 12th 2009. In the first 11 1/2 months of 2009 already 150 murders of trans people have been reported.
Please note that these numbers do not portray the reality. The reality is much worse. These are only the reported cases which could be found with some research in the internet. Desde 1999, cada mes de noviembre tiene lugar el llamado Día Internacional de Conmemoración Trans (TDOR) en el que personas trans recuerdan a personas trans asesinadas.

Notas sobre el proceso de registro de personas trans asesinadas
Al usar los datos presentados por el Observatorio de Personas Trans Asesinadas, debe tenerse en cuenta que, por los motivos expuestos a continuación, los resultados presentados no reflejan la verdadera situación. Sólo vislumbran una pincelada de la realidad, el pico del iceberg de los asesinatos a personas trans a nivel mundial. La realidad es mucho peor:
También es necesario tener en cuenta que el Observatorio de Personas Trans Asesinadas registra todo tipo de asesinatos a personas trans. La clasificación de los asesinatos de personas trans como crímenes de odio suele resultar difícil debido a la falta de información en las noticias, así como la falta de sistemas nacionales de registro. No obstante, la violencia brutal y las circunstancias descritas de los casos registrados indican que en bastantes, quizás en casi todos casos, se trata de crímenes de odio tránsfobos o crímenes relacionados con situaciones específicas que las personas trans tienen que afrontar (ej. tener que ejercer el trabajo sexual para ganarse la vida debido a la falta de oportunidades de empleo). En esta primera fase de presentación de los resultados, éstos se han clasificado como registros de personas trans asesinadas.

A summary of Transgender Day of Remembrance around the world
Transgender Europe would like to thank everyone who took part in our call to remember those who lost their lives. Below you will find summaries of some of the events that took place on the 20th of November.

In Stockholm we held a manifestation at a queer venue called Högkvarteret in the center of town.
Four trans activists gave their view on issues on hate crimes, invisibility, resistance, love and hope. Around 40 people where gathered for the event.
The speakers were:
Nadja Karlsson, chairman of FPE-S (full personality expression Sweden)
Christine Sahlström, secretary of KIM (gender, identity, diversity)
Silva Eiseb, trans activist
Micke Kjeldsen, trans activist
We formed a circle with candles and listened to music by Alex Fridunger.
It was a great evening of love, togetherness and hope!

TGEU member organisation Pink Life holds from 22.-28.11. in Ankara, Turkey the Trans Remembrance Meeting. TGEU will be present at the discussion on International trans Rights Activism at the Ekin Arts Center on the 28th at 13:00.

TGEU also sent a video message to the trans-community and activists in Turkey. Follow the link to download the video-message. Julia Ehrt, co-chair of TGEU congratulates the activists in Ankara to the scope of the conference. Julia highlights the need for international pressure to respond adequately to the shocking numbers of transphobic violence and murders. Alone in 2010 six are known to have been killed according to the TMM Project. TGEU declares its solidarity with the trans people in Turkey and committs to the international campaign, organized by pembe hayat. |

Russia's first ever legally permitted public demonstration on LGBT issues tok place on November 20 in St. Petersburg. The some 15 demonstrators took up for about 40 minutes with the sourrounding 100 ultra-right wing, religous and hooligan counter-protesters. The 40 police-officers were outnumbered and not able to protect the officially allowed demonstration and to prevent that posters were torn down and the demonstrators attacked with eggs. However, the organizers of the demonstration marked it as a big success. The demonstration called for an end to transphobic violence. |
