A step forward, but not far enough: TGEU demands full self-determination in Czechia

TGEU celebrates the progress made by the Czech Ministry of Health in issuing new guidelines on legal gender recognition that finally remove the requirement for forced sterilisation.

Sweden’s new Legal Gender Recognition Act has officially come into force. The reform simplifies the legal gender recognition procedure but falls short of a full self-determination model.

In a pivotal judgment delivered today, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has found that the Czech Republic violates the rights of trans people by requiring forced sterilisation as a legal requirement for legal gender recognition.

ACCEPT, TGEU and ILGA-Europe welcome today’s decision of the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU)  in case C-4/23 Mirin, strengthening the rights of trans people. The Court said that the refusal of an EU Member State to recognise changes of forename and gender acquired in another Member State is contrary to the rights of EU citizens.

The Parliament of Georgia voted in the third and final reading for laws aimed against LGBTI people by restricting their rights to non-discrimination, health care and education, freedom of speech and peaceful assembly, and the right to security.
