Transgender Europe - TGEU
TransGender Europe – TGEU is a European third sector, umbrella organization, which works towards the full equality and inclusion of all trans people in Europe. TGEU was founded in 2005, in Vienna, during the 1st European Transgender Council in Vienna and is today registered as an NGO under Austrian Law. Currently (September 2011) TGEU has 38 member groups from 23 countries, from the wider Europe and beyond.
- Advocating and promoting the rights of trans people and their communities with the European Institutions
- Raising awareness on the issues that trans people and their communities ‘ experience
- Engaging with Research, including undertaking First Class Research on trans people and their communities, including their experiences of:
- Prejudice and discrimination, including bars to access to civil life
- Employment, training and education
- Accessing goods, services and facilities, including accessing the civil justice system, and
- Experiences of crime and accessing the criminal justice system
- Networking and building alliances with local, national, and regional governance and other NGOs
- Developing tools for the empowerment of trans people and their communities within Europe, to enable engagement with civil life
- TGEU works to enhance the Human Rights and Equality of trans people, without impinging on the Human Rights and Equality of any other person or group in society
KEY ACTIVITIES
European Transgender Council: the biennial conference on human rights activism in the field of transgender equality in Europe with more than 200 delegates, from throughout Europe; 2005: Vienna, 2008: Berlin, 30 Sept – 3 Oct 2010: Malmo
- Transgender Capacity Building Seminar Budapest 2009
- European Grundtvig learning partnership project “... and others. Argumentation Training for Transgender Inclusion in Europe.” (2009 – 2011)
Information Exchange Electronic Platform
Lobbying & Advocacy with the European Institutions:
- Lobbying European Institutions including the European Parliament, EU-Presidency, European Commission, Council of Europe
- The Council of Europe working group on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity discrimination
- Contribution to the Fundamental Rights Agency study on LGBT in Europe
- Working with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, towards the Issue Paper “Gender Identity & Human Rights” and his study on LGBT in all Council member states.
Research and Awareness Raising Campaigns:
- Trans Murder Monitoring Project initiated 2009, pilot project of a comprehensive international research project: “Trans-Respect versus Trans-Phobia worldwide” (2010 - 2012)
- Multi-lingual presentation of “International Transgender Day of Remembrance” 2009
- TransEuro Study (2008) large scale study with 2575 participants from 13 countries on legal situation and access to health care.
- Close cooperation with ILGA Europe (Trans Rights Conference Malta Oct 2009 )
- International Day Against Homophobia – IDAHO-Campaign 2009
- STP 2012 – Trans Depathologization Campaign 2009
