Europe must lead: TGEU calls for urgent response to global health crisis impacting trans lives

TGEU — Trans Europe and Central Asia — calls on European leaders to take immediate action in response to a worsening global health and human rights crisis disproportionately impacting trans people and other marginalised communities.

On 20 January 2025, US President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14169, titled Reevaluating and Realigning United States Foreign Aid. The Order suspended all U.S. foreign assistance programmes, including the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) for 90 days to conduct a comprehensive review. The freeze, carried out by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, halted billions of dollars in funding for global health programmes, leaving millions without access to life-saving treatment and services.

ILGA-Europe and TGEU celebrate the judgement of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Minasyan and Others v. Armenia, upholding the rights of victims of homophobic and transphobic hate speech.

We call on the UK government to reconsider this harmful decision and to engage meaningfully with both the medical and scientific community and civil society groups representing the interests of trans youth and trans adults.
